Teaching with AI

FIU's AI Policy

The Office of the Provost has created guidelines for all FIU faculty with regards to AI use in the classroom. This university-wide policy has two specific stipulations: (1) all FIU faculty must have a clear policy on their syllabi with respect to AI and (2) it is up to each faculty member to decide to what degree they want to engage with AI as a teaching and learning tool. While the university does encourage FIU faculty to explore the scope and possibilities of these tools by integrating them into their courses, it does not require them to do so.

How exactly does someone teach with Generative AI? How do we incorporate these powerful tools into the teaching and learning strategies that we want to embody in our classrooms? Tools like ChatGPT,  DALL•E and Elicit can write essays, answer multiple choice and free response questions, create literature reviews and images, and write/decode programs. The wide range of AI capabilities continues to grow every day, and the impact of these tools is far reaching and affects all of our programs across all disciplines.

There are several approaches to instructional design and assessment that may help create opportunities for deeper learning in the classroom when using generative AI. The ideas outlined in the sections below will provide you with some insights on how to leverage this technology for your own purposes.
