Dr. Helen Urpi Wagner Coello serves as Assistant Director of STEM Teaching Practice and Gateway Initiatives in the Center for the Advancement of Teaching. Helen earned her Ph.D. in Biology from Florida International University, where her research spanned genomics, bioinformatics, landscape ecology, and pedagogy. She subsequently completed two postdoctoral fellowships focused on implementing institutional change and investigating undergraduate student belonging, identity, storytelling and support. During her time as a postdoc, Helen also served as an AAC&U NLA Fellow, an ICQCM Fellow and an NPA IMPACT Fellow. Helen also brings expertise in community-engaged learning and undergraduate research, having led a highly successful citizen science internship program that provided research experiences to nearly 1,000 students. In her role at CAT, she will collaborate with faculty, departments, and campus partners through the Gateway Initiative, promoting the use of student data and feedback to inform evidence-based teaching practices that improve student learning and success.
